Pam is preparing for a radically lighter life, eventually hoping to travel with little more than a backpack. But getting there means confronting decades of possessions, memories, aspirations, and the surprisingly powerful reasons we hold onto things.
In this conversation, Pamela and I dig into the reality of downsizing after 50. Why is it so difficult to get rid of things we haven’t touched in years? Why do we keep clothes that no longer fit, boxes we never open, and objects inherited from people we love? And how much time, money, and mental energy does all that stuff quietly consume?
Shocking statistic: we could have in excess of 300,000 items in our homes. Is it any wonder that attempting to empty our homes, to trade material possessions for experiences, is so hard?
Pam shares the system she’s using to gradually dismantle a lifetime of accumulation without becoming overwhelmed. Start somewhere small. Work for 20 minutes instead of trying to clear an entire house. Create a permanent donation box. Get unwanted things out quickly. Digitize memories when the physical object no longer matters. Most importantly, stop bringing new things in without asking what you’re giving up in exchange.
Her simplest idea may also be the most powerful: less stuff means more life. More space, less maintenance, fewer expenses, less stress, and more freedom to spend your time and money on experiences rather than possessions.
You don’t have to become a minimalist or live out of a backpack. But if you’re thinking about a different next chapter, it may be worth asking whether everything you’ve accumulated still belongs in it.
