In this episode of Nomads 50+, host Chris Kalaboukis talks with Benjamin Hies, a global consultant and entrepreneur who traded corporate life for the freedom of the digital nomad lifestyle. Benjamin’s story spans multiple continents—from studying business in Germany and the UK, to launching companies in Cyprus, the UAE, and finally finding his home base in Thailand.

Benjamin shares how his early adventures in Australia sparked a lifelong love of travel and independence. After years of pursuing traditional success through degrees and consulting jobs, he realized that freedom and flexibility mattered more than prestige. When the pandemic derailed his plans to move to Singapore, he pivoted—quickly building a consulting business in Cyprus, then expanding into the UAE to take advantage of tax-friendly policies.
Now living in Bangkok with a long-term “golden visa,” Benjamin has structured his life around balance and diversification. In addition to his consulting work, he’s invested in a tea franchise business and experimented with algorithmic trading in Estonia—creating multiple income streams to sustain a truly global lifestyle.
Benjamin’s advice for aspiring nomads is refreshingly practical:
1️⃣ Don’t let age hold you back.
2️⃣ Test destinations before you commit.
3️⃣ Keep your finances and taxes simple at the start—optimize later.
This episode is a masterclass in how to build freedom through planning, adaptability, and global thinking.
